How do I choose between a straight flute, spiral point, and spiral flute tap for my application?

Tool selection depends primarily on the type of hole you are tapping:

  1. Straight Flute Taps: Ideal for short-chip materials (like cast iron) and suitable for both blind and through holes.
  2. Spiral Point Taps (Plug Taps): Designed for through holes. They push chips forward ahead of the tool, preventing clogging.
  3. Spiral Flute Taps: Crucial for blind holes. The helical flutes pull chips upward and out of the hole, minimizing the risk of chip packing and tap breakage.
What are the primary causes of tap breakage, and how can I prevent it?

Tap breakage is usually caused by inadequate chip evacuation, improper hole sizing, or misalignment. To optimize process reliability, ensure that:

  1. The pre-drill hole diameter is correct (refer to our Tap Drill Chart).
  2. High-quality tapping fluid or soluble oil is used to maximize lubricity.
  3. For tough materials like stainless steel or titanium, consider upgrading to JIAYI SEIKO's premium chipless forming taps (roll taps) or specialized coated cutting taps to eliminate chip-related failures.
What coatings and tool materials are recommended for high-volume tapping in stainless steel?

For stainless steel (such as 304/316) and other gummy materials, standard HSS taps wear out rapidly. JIAYI SEIKO recommends high-vanadium high-speed steel (HSSE-V3) or powder metallurgy cobalt HSS substrate, paired with TiAlN or CrN coatings. These advanced coatings offer exceptional heat resistance and low friction coefficients, effectively preventing built-up edge (BUE) and significantly extending tool life.
